Electrician dude came out today. The verdict? He dunno.
Dunno if it fried because of the rain-leak. Dunno if it's something else. Dunno where precisely the problem is because he chased it around the entire house, into the ceiling and under the roof and through every house for several hours until it was pitch black outside.
The only thing we DO know is that there is a whole craploada blackwire and rubberwire up there.
Which is interesting, since we had a prepurchase inspection and having dealt with it in our Hawthorn home (built in 1911) I specifically asked about it's presence here and was told there was some but it was remanent, inactive and the plasticwire sound. Then again, the roof was also rated as secure. Not only are the rubberwires crumbling and craptastic but they are NOT inactive - probably the reason for the problem... two of them crumbling, touching and killing the circuit... and rather interestingly rigged with other wiring and done in a way that beggars belief.
Recomendation? While we're replacing the roof, we should replace all the wiring up there too.
*whimpers as I wave bye-bye to Canberra*

Oh no.
I fell your pain.
What with Canberra??? Ok, I haven't been reading your blog as religiously as I could be, but I've skimmed and scanned back to the middle of April, and I can't see a reference to Canberra (I am blind, so maybe I missed it, rofl)...
Mantles looking mantificent!!! I don't mind that pinky red colour on your walls, actually, but I guess I don't live with it every day, LOL...
That's because you've been reading the wrong blog Sif! ;-p I mentioned it more in my chook blog I think?
There is a big poultry congress happening in Canberra - one of the best places to get rare-breeds and rare genes and all in one place, as otherwise I'll have to take a few weeks to drive around the entire country to Qld, NSW, SA etc. It's also not going to happen again until 2012 and we'd been planning to go for probably the past year or so. Unfortunately the total for the roof, electric etc is going to be somewhere (conservitively) around $23K, completely unexpected and while we can swing it, my ability to go there with La, have someone here to watch the critters, hotel, purchasing anything etc is pretty firmly kaput.
I don't hate the pinky colour but it's not my favorite. I think it'd look better with the rugs and fabric I want to redo the couches with as a sort of sagey-silvery-green colour. But it's pretty far down the list of renos atm, so it may be here awhile yet - worse things in life I suppose than pinky-red walls!
