Lucy, to get a new background you go to one of the sites that has designs for free, copy the code they have, open up your blog at the dashboard. Select "Layout", then "Edit HTML", back up your old template, and in the box under "Edit Template" copy and paste the new template into the space. Preview to make sure you like it and save the new template. You will generally loose your little widgets but they're easy enough to reinstall.
